»Clinical Health Technologies«, Fraunhofer IPA, Mannheim

The department »Clinical Health Technologies« at Fraunhofer IPA at the Medical Faculty Mannheim, University Heidelberg, was set up by the state of Baden-Württemberg and Fraunhofer to develop new ideas for automation in medicine and biotechnology. It is the first known research establishment with such a focus. The department is located at CUBEX⁴¹ at the heart of the University Hospital in Mannheim and is part of the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA at Stuttgart.

This environment enables the access to and cooperation with all medical and biotechnological facilities in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan area which is ranked among the largest in Germany and Europe. Thanks to the close, multi-disciplinary cooperation within the department as well as with the partners in the metropolitan area, a complete spectrum of services is offered – from idea to clinical evaluation.

Head of Department

Dr.-Ing. Jens Langejürgen

Jens Langejürgen was born in Bad Oeynhausen in 1981 and studied physics at the RWTH Aachen University from 2002. He wrote his diploma thesis about body core temperature sensors based on thermal flow. Subsequently, he worked on methods for non-invasive photoacoustic temperature measurement at the eye fundus. In 2009 he started a PhD in electrical engineering and metrology at the Leibniz University of Hannover on the topic of organic trace gas analysis. He passed his doctoral thesis with distinction and received the award of the Stiftung NiedersachenMetall for outstanding scientific work.

After one year of postdoctoral work at the Centre for Analytical Science at Loughborough University, he joined Fraunhofer in 2016 as group leader for Biomedical Sensors and Microsystems. Since 2021 he is Head of Department at the Fraunhofer Project Group.
