The potential of 5G technology

Digitalization is driving major transformation processes in many areas of our society—including medicine.

The accompanying increase in digital communication and the networking of devices, applications, and information, as well as the steadily growing volume of data, make the use of a strong network necessary.

5G mobile technology meets this requirement perfectly: with the help of 5G, many devices can be managed and high bandwidths made available – all while complying with the high data security requirements of the clinical sector.

Our range of services for you: Test laboratory for 5G applications

We offer our project partners, interested companies, and research institutions the opportunity to test and validate developments, prototypes, and devices under real-world conditions at our 5G Transfer Center.

Our hybrid operating room real-world laboratory, equipped with 5G mobile communications technology, serves as a technology development platform that enables the development and testing of 5G-enabled devices in a clinical environment.

Unlike comparable wireless network technologies, the frequency bands of 5G are licensed, which prevents interference from third parties (e.g., private hotspots of patients). The clinic is the sole user of the 5G frequency band on its premises, which greatly increases the reliability and availability of the network.

Additional services:

  • Analysis of devices and medical products for 5G compatibility
  • Testing of 5G devices under real-world conditions
  • Prototype development of 5G-enabled devices
  • Consulting on the setup of 5G infrastructures in laboratories and clinical settings
  • Comparative implementation in our WiFi 6E network

5G in medical technology

5G is the fifth generation of mobile communications and offers a significant performance improvement over 4G.

The very low latency and high transmission reliability within the 5G wireless network enable new applications that cannot be implemented with conventional wireless technologies. Telemedicine and highly mobile systems in particular benefit from the new generation.

Our equipment

At our site, we operate exclusive and local 5G mobile networks, which supply our hybrid operating room and adjacent laboratories, among other facilities.

The 5G campus networks are ideal for testing and validation purposes and offer optimal performance for medical technology applications. Self-management of the networks allows us to adjust parameters as required.

Our expertise

For over 10 years, we have been committed to driving innovation and making key contributions to the medical care of the future. As part of CUBEX 41, with its unique location in the heart of the hospital grounds, we are in direct contact with Mannheim University Hospital and high-profile start-ups and established companies.

Thanks to our experience from national and international projects such as 5G4KMU, in which we established the first 5G SA network in the clinical sector in Germany in 2021, and 5G-OR (5g-or.eu), we have already integrated a broad portfolio of medical devices into 5G infrastructures.

In addition to the direct integration of devices into 5G networks, we work with self-developed 5G gateways to integrate embedded systems with limited connectivity into campus networks. This significantly lowers the hurdle of using devices in 5G networks that do not natively support the new mobile communications standard.
